Ark. Woman Arrested in Foster Child's Death

A Eudora woman has been arrested on a battery charge in the death of her 22-month-old foster daughter

The girl, Keyundra Smith, was one of four foster children who died in a recent two-month period. The Arkansas State Police and the state Human Services Department have been investigating the deaths.

Thirty-five-year-old Eleisha Sykes was out on bond after her arrest on a first-degree battery charge in Keyundra's May 28th death. An arrest affidavit says the toddler died of apparent brain injuries consistent with "shaken-baby syndrome." Keyundra also had bruises on her sides, back, buttocks and legs.

Sykes' lawyer says Sykes maintains her innocence. Sykes told investigators she left Keyundra on a bed to go to the kitchen. She said when she returned Keyundra was on the floor and wasn't breathing. She said the toddler's bruises may have been from a previous fall.
